PLANDAMPF is the concept of getting sufficient enthusiasts to pay to use preserved steam locomotives to haul scheduled passenger and /or goods trains. This idea started in Germany in October 1990, and has seen a large number of highly successful events. David Sprackland from Andover, England, has been the key UK contact point for information on these events since they started and this page has been given to him so that his much appreciated work in this area can continue. Planned events will be featured here, along with certain Sonderzug being run by Plandampf organisers in Germany.

As full details of the next major Plandampf become available Plandampfers will be able to use a link on this page to use a printable application form that can be posted off to David along with your remittance. Please note that payments will still need to be made as before, i.e by cheque. So again, to make sure you can use this new service please add this page to your "Favourites". Every effort will be made to try and post up to date and accurate information here. But any of the events below can be cancelled for a number of reasons: sometimes very close to the actual date the event is planned for. This could be because one or more of the locos becomes unserviceable, because insufficient people have paid for the event, because late changes have been imposed by DB or a host of other reasons. So be warned! And please also read the DISCLAIMER on this web page and also the Notes and Conditions for attendance at Plandampfs and other Events which must be accepted by anyone wishing to participate. Plandampf & Other Events 13 & 14 FEBRUARY 2010, PLANDAMPF: "DAMPF TRIFFT KOHLE", PROFEN - ZEITZ - MEUSELWITZ - PHOENIX POWER STATION
Heavy coal trains, and return empties, hauled by two Class 52.8 2-10-0, also a few photo-specials hauled by 52 1360 (or 35 1097, if 52 not available). Locos can be turned on a triangle at the power station so will be chimney-first both ways. The railway scene around Zeitz remains much as it was in the "Reichsbahn era", with semaphore signals and traditional signal boxes etc. The coal trains will be formed of grey self-loading hopper wagons, with any modern logos painted over for the event. If there is sufficient money there will be a night photography session in Leipzig on the Saturday evening. PARTICIPATION FEE £180 PER PERSON, OR £125 FOR A SINGLE DAY. Photo-special passenger and goods trains in the very scenic Lower Tatra region of Slovakia. 19-21 Feb Passenger trains using 498.104, 22 Feb Goods trains using 556.036. If either of these is not available, 475.196 will be used. PARTICIPATION FEE £705 PER PERSON. 1 - 7 APRIL 2010 (EASTER), "175 YEARS OF GERMAN RAILWAYS". VARIOUS LINES IN THE TRIER AND GEROLSTEIN AREA
Here is the latest message from David Sprackland about these two Plandampfs. Dear All, At last this is the info some of you have been waiting for! The delay in issuing this was caused by the plans for the Plandampf being changed several times. In case anyone is still confused, there are TWO interlinking events at Easter, firstly "Dampfspektakel" celebrating 175 years of railways in Germany, organised by the government and rail authorities of Rheinland-Pfalz. This comprises various exhibitions etc and, more importantly for us, a series of SPECIAL passenger trains. This event is definitely happening, as it is financed by ticket sales and public funds. In addition to this there is a proposed Plandampf event, organised by The Revierdampf-Team, to celebrate 20 years of "Plandampf". This will comprise steam hauled REGULAR passenger and goods trains, also a few "photo-special" goods trains. This event will only happen if sufficient money is collected from intending participants by 19 Feb 2010. Contrary to what was originally planned, this will now take largely place on days when little or nothing happens on the "main" event. DAMPFSPEKTAKEL 2-6 April 2010 Full details of this, in German and English, can be found on www.dampfspektakel with other information including a list of locos on www.revierdampf.de PLANDAMPF: "20 JAHRE PLANDAMPF" 2,3,5 and 6 April (ie not 4 April) This is the normal Plandampf event that has to be paid for by participants if it is to proceed. 2 April: one RE train each way between Trier and Koln using 01 1066 and 01 509 3 & 5 April: one RE one way only on each day on same route. 6 April: one RE each way as 2 April, plus local passenger, RB, trains between Trier and Gerolstein using various locos. Also goods and photo-special goods between Gerolstein and Euskirchen (52 6106) and Gerolstein and Ulmen (58 311, but subject to confirmation after a bridge inspection has been carried out.) PARTICIPATION FEE FOR PLANDAMPF "20 JAHRE PLANDAMPF" Iis £170 (190 euro) PER PERSON. PAYMENT DEADLINE 19 FEB 2010* *Payments made by this date will help ensure the event will go ahead, but payment will also be accepted after this date. INFO-PACK The Revierdampf-Team will produce an info-pack for the Dampfspektakel, with details of loco diagrams, line descriptions and lists of photo spots etc, including some English translation. These can be ordered from me with a payment of £15, preferably in bank notes. It will, however, be provided FREE to those who PAY for the PLANDAMPF by 19 FEB. All Plandampf participants will, of course, be provided with the info-pack for that event. TICKETS For travel on the SPECIAL trains, SPECIAL TICKETS will be required, the one day and five day "rover" versions will also allow travel on ALL local (RE,RB etc) services in the area. There was a suggestion that they are not valid north of Gerolstein, but according to the map on the web page, I think they are! Details of the special tickets can be found on www.dampfspektakel.info/tickets-und-preise and the rover tickets can also be ordered via a link on that site. 20 JAHRE PLANDAMPF BOOK The Revierdampf-Team are producing a book about the history of Plandampf over the last 20 years. This will cost 25 euro (£24) or 20 euro (£19) if ordered before 31 March. If there is sufficient interest in this country, I will take orders. There may be an extra charge for postage.
