PLANDAMPF is the concept of getting sufficient enthusiasts to pay to use preserved steam locomotives to haul scheduled passenger and /or goods trains. This idea started in Germany in October 1990, and has seen a large number of highly successful events. David Sprackland from Andover, England, has been the key UK contact point for information on these events since they started and this page has been given to him so that his much appreciated work in this area can continue. Planned events will be featured here, along with certain Sonderzug being run by Plandampf organisers in Germany.
He can be contacted by E Mail: davidsprackland(at)hotmail.co.uk To reduce SPAM you will have to type the address using @ instead of the (a) shown. David plans to use this page to replace the E mails he has sent to certain Plandampfers in the past. So if you want to keep in touch electronically with Plandampf please add this page to you "Favourites", and come back from time to time. As full details of the next major Plandampf become available Plandampfers will be able to use a link on this page to use a printable application form that can be posted off to David along with your remittance. Please note that payments will still need to be made as before, i.e by cheque. So again, to make sure you can use this new service please add this page to your "Favourites". Every effort will be made to try and post up to date and accurate information here. But any of the events below can be cancelled for a number of reasons: sometimes very close to the actual date the event is planned for. This could be because one or more of the locos becomes unserviceable, because insufficient people have paid for the event, because late changes have been imposed by DB or a host of other reasons. So be warned! And please also read the DISCLAIMER on this web page and also the Notes and Conditions for attendance at Plandampfs and other Events which must be accepted by anyone wishing to participate. German DVD and Videos at a discount. David has recently reconfirmed with Rio Grande and three other companies, (MIBA, Eisenbahn Journal and Eisenbahn Romantik), that now form the Verlagsgruppe Bahn, that he can still buy from their wide range of DVD's and Videos at a small discount. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this should contact David at davidspracklandatbushinternet.com. To reduce SPAM you will have to type the address using @ instead of the at shown. |

| PLANDAMPF POLSKA
To help with the Wolsztyn Experience cash crisis, a number of Wolsztyn regulars have come up with the idea of ‘Plandampf Polska’ as a fund-raiser for the organisation. Details are being worked out, but the event is planned to take place over a five-day period in October. In true Plandampf tradition, the event will see steam replacing diesel traction on scheduled freight and passenger services around Wolsztyn, together with some additional workings to provide added interest. In parallel with the Plandampf workings, the normal twice-daily Wolsztyn-Poznan passenger service will be in operation, providing further opportunities for riding and photography. There may also be a photo shoot at a long-disused industrial location on the nearby Smigiel narrow gauge line immediately prior to the main Plandampf. Starting on 6th October, the three day Plandampf proper features two days of steam-hauled freight on the line from Zbaszynek and on trips around the Wolsztyn area, as well as additional freight workings and shunting in the yard at Wolsztyn. A photo shoot in the yard is planned, as well as numerous opportunities for filming the freight each day, in an area untouched by modernisation. The plans for Plandampf Polska also feature a passenger day that sees steam on the Leszno line, which has been diesel-only since the timetable change last December, and a special passenger service from Leszno to Ostrow (and return) on a lightly-used, double track main line with semaphore signals. The passenger trains would be formed of PKP bogie stock in the old style green livery. Photo stops are planned for the Ostrow special and the freight workings to allow photographers to overtake the train. Power for the passenger services will be the 2-8-2 Pt47 65 – a loco similar to the German 41class and roughly akin to a Britannia, equally at home on express passenger and freight workings. The Pt47’s were the standard long distance passenger locos in the latter days of PKP main line steam and also handled the Wolsztyn freight workings after the 2-10-0 Ty3 and Ty45 finished, hauling nearly 1700 tonnes on at least one occasion. Accordingly, the Pt47 will also be in use on the freight days but will share duties with the 1921-built Prussian 2-8-0 Tr5 65, which also ran as Deutsche Reichsbahn 56 511. The Tr5 is rarely used and will be much appreciated performing the role it was designed to do. The possibility of bringing a Ty2 2-10-0 to Wolsztyn for the Plandampf freights is being investigated but it is too early to say if this will be feasible. It is also likely to be dependant on the level of interest in (and support for) the operation of a Ty2 at the event. Following on from the three days of Plandampf, on Friday 9th one of the regular Wolsztyn - Poznan diagrams is likely to use the elegant Pacific Pm36 2 ‘Beautiful Helena’ in lieu of the normal Ol49 2-6-2. The Pm36 will also work a high-speed service from Wolsztyn to Wroclaw on Saturday 10th October, a journey of some 160 km in each direction. Beyond Leszno, ‘Helena’ often reaches speeds in excess of 120 kph and, with more of the route – and the Pm - passed for 140 kph, an exciting run is in prospect. Steam at over 80mph may result! The participation contribution is £150 per person, in return for which participants will receive full details of the workings during the Plandampf proper and for the trains on 9th and 10th October. An alternative package, aimed at riders rather than photographers, is priced at £100 and will cover the cost of travel on the Leszno – Ostrow special with the Pt47 and on the high-speed run to/from Wroclaw with Pm36 2 (but does not include details of the freight workings). Should participants on the main £150 package wish to travel on one or both of these trains, a discounted fare will be available. Travel on scheduled services to Poznan and Leszno will require payment of normal PKP fares but these are very reasonably priced. Wolsztyn is much more accessible these days, with direct flights from Stansted (Ryanair) and Luton (Wizzair) to Poznan, where the airport is an easy bus or taxi ride from the main station. Trains to Wolsztyn run at roughly two hourly intervals. A flight to Berlin is also an option, albeit with a longer train journey to Wolsztyn. Car hire is readily available at both Poznan and Berlin airports for those who wish to drive. Directions can be provided for those unfamiliar with the region. Assistance with hotel accommodation in the Wolsztyn area can be provided for those who do not wish to make their own arrangements and, in a departure from normal Plandampf practice, it is hoped to operate a minibus or coach service (dependent on demand) for linesiders who would prefer not to hire a car for the event. An additional charge would be made for this facility. The organisers are aware that other Plandampf events are proposed in Germany this autumn and stress that they do not wish to abstract support from these events. Spokesman Julian Worth said ‘We would encourage everyone to support the events organised by our good friends in Lo-Rie and Revierdampf. Whilst our dates are fixed by the Wroclaw high speed run, there is scope for a wonderful autumn trip to Germany and Poland, combining the Revierdampf event in Rhein-Neckar on 25-27th September, Lo-Rie’s proposed freight photo charter between Klodzko and Walbrzych on 1/2nd October and Plandampf Polska from 5th to 10th October.’ So, if you’ve never been to Wolsztyn or haven’t been back since regular freight finished – or perhaps did the Wolsztyn Experience some years ago - this is a marvellous opportunity to see just how good Polish steam can be and, at the same time, helping to ensure a future for steam at Wolsztyn. The deadline for payments is 15th August. If sufficient money is not received by this date, the event will be cancelled and all contributions will be refunded in full. David Sprackland has offered to collect contributions for Plandampf Polska, as he does for the German events. Please note that other enquiries about Plandampf Polska should be directed to Julian Worth at plandampfpolska@hotmail.co.uk or on 07752 138386.
